Saputara, which literally means ‘abode of snakes’, stands at a startling height of 1000metre on a plateau in the forest area of Dang district in Gujrat. The hill station is named so for the snake like images on the banks of the river, Sarpagana. The well planned tourist spot is well known for luxury hotels, swimming pools and ropeways. The famous points to see in Saputara are Purna Sanctuary, Sunrise point, Sunset point, the ropeway, Vansda National Park and various gardens.
Covering an area of 160 square kilometer Purna Sanctuary is a part of an opaque damp forest in the Western Ghat. It is at Mahali almost covering 60 km of the northern part of Dang. The enchanting sanctuary is visited by rivers like Gira and Purna. The idyllic surroundings place one in the midst of celestial bliss. Sunrise point is another famous Saputara point to be seen. Visitors can’t afford to miss such a sight.
Though tourists are suggested to visit the place only at sunrise, many others opine that it is worthy visiting at any time of the day to have a divine view of the quaint place. Sunset point which witnesses a spectacular view of the Dang forest and a bird’s eye view of the remote tribal villages is also another chosen famous point to see at Saputara. Gira waterfalls only 52 km away from Saputara is a must visit for tourists. Vanda National park which was once the personal forest of the Maharaja of Vansada now requires an advanced permission from the forest department to visit. The forest though covers a small area populating wild animals like tigers and leopards, snakes like python. Another famous point to see near Saputara is the Lake, the perfect place for visitors to paddle on or row on the slow ripples of the lake wooed by the careless breeze.
